Lotion Ingredients Can Irritate
Because healthcare workers must wash and sanitize their hands frequently, they can get dry, irritated, or even cracked. Lotions often contain ingredients that can further irritate dry skin and can weaken the natural skin barrier function.
Mineral oil is a petroleum product. It is a common inexpensive ingredient in many lotions because it is occlusive, meaning that it forms a barrier that makes it hard for water to leave your skin so it’s moisture can be retained. The downside is that the barrier mineral oils create suffocate and disrupt your natural skin barrier and can throw off your natural pH balance, which can worsening your skin’s health and actually cause dry patches. Other names for mineral oil include paraffinum liquidum, paraffin, petrolatum, microcrystalline wax, and mineral spirits.
Formaldehyde, a known skin irritant and carcinogen, can be added directly to skin care products as a preservative. More often it is released from preservatives such as DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, polyoxymethylene urea, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, bromopol and glyoxal.
Simple, Pure Ingredients

Shea Butter
The fat extracted from the nuts of the shea tree is called shea butter. But unlike most tree nut products, shea butter is very low in the proteins that can trigger allergies. In fact, medical literature to date documents an allergy to topical shea butter. Most shea butter comes from West Africa where shea trees are native. Shea butter is solid at warm temperatures with a melting point of between 90°F to 100°F and has an ivory or off-white color.
Shea butter is an excellent moisturizing ingredient for relieving dry skin. Shea butter contains oleic, stearic, linoleic and palmitic acids that are excellent for supporting the skin’s natural barrier and allow the butter to meld seamlessly with the natural oils on your skin. The triterpene alcohols found in shea butter naturally reduce inflammation.
Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil is extracted from the seeds of the jojoba shrub that is native to the southwestern United States. Jojoba oil is not really an oil, but a wax ester that has remarkably similar properties to your skin’s own sebum. Jojoba is the only plant in the world that is known to produce pure liquid wax esters.
Jojoba oil is well known of its healing properties for helping to treat skin conditions including acne, eczema, psoriasis, sunburn, and chapped skin. Jojoba oil, which has antimicrobial and antifungal properties, helps to seal your skin with a protective barrier to keep it from losing moisture.
Beeswax
Beeswax has been used as a skin care ingredient since ancient Egyptian times. Beeswax, which has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, helps create a protective layer on the skin. Beeswax is also a humectant, which means that it attracts water to help the skin stay hydrated. Beeswax is also a natural exfoliator, ideal for sloughing away dead skin cells.
